Prof. Ng’s research group was very fortunate to have the company of Prof. Aronne Armanini of the University of Trento (in Italy) for several days in August. Prof. Armanini gave a fascinating seminar, covering topics such as how different types of geophysical flows may be quantifiably differentiated using rheological properties, as well as the governing equations that must be used to describe mixtures of grains and viscous fluids. He also discussed some of the mitigation measures for geophysical flows that are installed in Europe, covering how their effectiveness can be quantified and showing examples of undesirable designs.

Prof. Armanini also raised many insightful and constructive comments during my viva voce examination, for which I am extremely grateful.
